Locality: St. Croix, US Virgin Islands Abstract: The U. S. Virgin Islands Register of Big Trees documents types and locations of 78 remarkable big trees in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The measuring system, which records the total points merited by each tree, follows the system devised by the national organization, American Forests, for their big tree register, i.e. circumference at breast height in inches plus height in feet, is added to the quarter average crown spread in feet, to provide the tree's total points. The University of the Virgin Islands and the Urban and Community Forestry Assistance Program, V.I. Department of Agriculture sponsored this register. It comprises a list of 155 big trees on the three U.S. Virgin Islands (For a list of 139 of Puerto Rico's Champion Trees go to www.fs.fed.us/global/iitf/champlst.html). Trees are grouped by species and ranked by size. The measuring system gives the total points merited by each tree. The circumference at breast height in inches is added to the height in feet, plus the quarter average crown spread in feet, to provide the tree's total points. Below lists sequentially the circumference, the height, the average crown spread and total points. The circumference is measured at breast height (4.5ft) unless otherwise stated.
