Small tree or shrub to 7 m tall; trunk, stems, branches and leaves with conical spines. Leaves trifoliolate; leaflets 8-10 x 6-7.5 mm , broadly ovate to triangular, chartaceous, with yellowish, conical spines on both surfaces, the apex shortly acuminate, the base obtuse to truncate, the margins entire; petiolules swollen, with a pair of elongate glands at base; petioles and rachis spiny; stipules triangular, straw-colored, persistent. Racemes terminal, 5-10 cm long; bracts minute, persistent. Calyx nearly bell-shaped, truncate, 6-8 mm long; corolla bright red, the standard to 4-5 cm long, the wings and keel very small; stamens diadelphous. Legume to 12 cm long, woody, slightly flattened, deeply constricted between seeds, beaked at apex. Seeds to 12 mm long, oblongelliptic, bright red.
