Abstract: George Proctor carried out fieldwork on five major islands (St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. John, Tortola, and Virgin Gorda). This has served to augment the known distribution of some species, and has added a few more to the list. The following tabulation gives the presently accepted names of the 63 Virgin Islands pteridophytes, together with initials for the islands where they have been found. Except for maximum elevations, habitats for these species are similar to those for the same ones on the main island of Puerto Rico, where nearly all likewise occur.

For further information about these plants, consult the main part of this book. Of the taxa listed here, only Adiantum villosum, Nephrolepis aurifolia (introduced), and Pityrogramma chrysophylla var. subflexuosa are not recorded definitely from the mainland of Puerto Rico. The first of these cited by Urban (1903) on the basis of a specimen allegedly collected by Bertero (in 1818 or 1819) at an unknown locality. No further specimens have been recorded from mainland Puerto Rico, and Bertero may have found it on Vieques, where it is quite common.
